Welcome to our farm. I'm Simon Deleon Guerrero, a proud third-generation farmer dedicated to raising healthy pigs, cattle, chickens, ducks, rabbits, and other agriculture commodities. Our passion for farming runs deep in our family, and we are committed to sustainable practices that honor the land and our animals. U.S. EPA Region 9, Zero Waste Section Manager John Katz and EPA Washington D.C., Office of Resource Conservation and Recovery Director Carolyn Hoskinson spent their morning at Kumoi Farms to gain an understanding of our operations and learn about how CNMI piggeries partner with local restaurants to divert food waste from landfills - but they walked away with so much more!

A highlight of the 32nd Pacific Islands Environmental Training Symposium was a Field Day at Kumoi Farms, featuring the “Managing Food Waste Through Piggeries” segment—an innovative component of the CNMI’s Comprehensive Management Plan.

This initiative demonstrates sustainable, community-based solutions to food waste management through partnerships with local pig farmers like, Kumoi Farms, who repurpose food waste as a valuable agricultural resource.

The symposium is proudly hosted by the Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality (BECQ) and represents a collaborative effort between the CNMI BECQ Division of Environmental Quality, Guam EPA, and American Samoa EPA to strengthen environmental management and conservation awareness across the Pacific region.

This annual event fosters regional collaboration, knowledge sharing, and the advancement of environmentally responsible practices throughout the Pacific Islands.

Special thanks to @cnmideq and co-presenter Manny Camacho from the CNMI Office of Planning and Development for their leadership and dedication in making this impactful event possible.

Make a refreshing batch of fesh lemongrass tea in a few easy steps.

1. Rinse your cut lemongrass thoroughly and remove any impurities.
2. Tie your lemongrass into bundles before adding to a pot of boiling water. This will help you keep your leaf blades together when they're ready to extract.
3. Add your sweetner to taste. Lemongrass has a distinctive natural flavor that doesn't require much sweetner. You can also add in other herbs and natural additives. Mint leaves, rosemary, thyme, turmeric, calamansi, and ginger pair well with lemongrass.

Serve hot or cold, and enjoy!

Tinala’ kåtne directly translates to “dried meat” and is a Spanish-influenced Chamorro delicacy found in the western Pacific area called the Mariana Islands.

Before you tåla' (dry) your kåtne (meat), you can start off by cutting your meat portions and seasoning your meat with a very basic salt and pepper blend.

Here’s ours:

• local beef “petna” or “beef round” (you can substitute with any meaty cuts)
• salt
• ground black pepper
• Ajinomoto (optional, but preferred)

*all measurements are “seasoned to taste”

After the meat is generously seasoned, you can begin the drying and curing process either in your refrigerator, in the oven, using a dehydrator, or the old-fashioned way under direct sunlight.

We like it done the old-fashioned way so our meat gets to bask in the Marianas sunlight, naturally, for 6-12 hours.

When that process is completed, you can either store the dried meat in your freezer for later or fry it over high heat with your choice of cooking oil and serve it with hot rice and finadene.

The kindergarteners of Mount Carmel School were recently able to provide Kumoi Farms with valuable material for potential data-driven research that may help our farm, and other local farmers and ranchers, with opportunities to share God's beautiful gift of nature with the rest of our community.

The small but diverse class size, parent responsiveness, and joint efforts between Kumoi Farms and Mount Carmel School management made this collaboration a seamless success.

Veterinarian, Dr. Jessica Bell and veterinary technicians Aleena Nemeth and Nicole Valdez of Washington State University traveled to Saipan earlier this month via the USDA NextGen Grant.

During their trip, DLNR Animal Health Services Director Lauren Cabrera coordinated a visit to Kumoi Farms where the visiting team was able to make in-person contact with Kumoi Farms livestock to assess their needs and the needs of local farmers and ranchers.

Veterinary services are few and far between in the CNMI, and Kumoi Farms is grateful for this extraordinary opportunity. Thank you!

Our partners at the USDA NRCS Saipan Service Center Civil Engineering Technician, Martin Naputi, and Soil Conservationist, Solly Takai, visited Kumoi Farms to demonstrate their western region conservation program come full circle to their interns after they met with the facility designers.

What an honor and a privilege to be selected by the CNMI Department of Commerce alongside @islandry670 to promote our islands, our people, and our culture at the MEGA SHOW BANGKOK 2024 EXHIBITION at Thailand's BITEC (Bangkok International Trade Exhibition Center).

Our Kumoi Farms team has worked hard to showcase a few spin-offs from our traditional farming culture - a different and unique angle to better reach the flourishing global markets.

🚨 PLEASE BE ON THE LOOK OUT FOR STOLEN WATERMELONS AND/OR CATTLE!

Last night, the Ports Police notified surrounding farmers in the Obyan area that cattle were found outside of their enclosures. What initially seemed to be an occasional occurrence turned out to be theft.

This morning, we discovered that roughly 75 watermelons were stolen from our Obyan cattle ranch and that our gate locks were tampered with. We also discovered tools on the ground around the ranch entrance, broken farm equipment, and empty Bud Light cans scattered where the produce is grown and had been stolen.

The CNMI Department of Public Safety was notified early this morning and is currently working on this case. We were told that we are not the first theft report of this kind and that other local farms have recently been broken into. We are humbly asking for the community's help to report any suspicious or unusual activity to DPS.

Join us on Instagram for Baby Sims' 3rd birthday as he hosts his class for the conclusion of Kumoi Farms' primary grade level field trips.

As Kumoi Farms lays the framework for our producer driven research and data collection, we have to heighten our biosecurity measures and can no longer accept field trip requests from the primary grade level after January 16, 2024.

This is just a fancy way of saying that Kumoi Farms needs to limit the amount of disease causing agents that enter and leave our facility by controlling the amount of foot traffic coming in and out of our farm. By doing so, we'll be able to ensure the safety and quality of our animals as we strive to reach our goals.

Although the farm will still be open, only producers and select secondary/postsecondary students interested in data collection and the implementation of animal welfare practices will be allowed on site for the time being.
